Tasmanian Bands League

The Tasmanian Bands League was formed in 1946. It is made up of twelve (12) member bands, some of which operate more than one ensemble e.g., senior and junior band. There are almost 1,000 musicians registered with the League. The standard of Tasmanian bands is on a par with their mainland counterparts. Tasmanian bands regularly compete at National level with quite a degree of success.
One member band, Latrobe Federal, is possibly the oldest, continuously operating band in the country. Community bands provide a musical outlet for a wide range of people in regional areas. Band members range in age from around 10 years to 80 years of age, with equal representation of both males and females. Many bands are supported by local government. This is largely in recognition of the movement’s contribution to local musical and cultural events. Whether it be by way of concerts, parades, shows, fairs, sporting events or other community functions, a brass or concert band is regularly called upon to provide entertainment and "colour".

League Objectives

The objectives of the League are: promote the interests and objectives of its member bands; organise and conduct band contests and competitions; foster and encourage the study of band instrumental music and marching; promote the general love and knowledge of band music and associated activities; promote and maintain good fellowship among band persons throughout Tasmania.

League Activities

The main activities of the League are: the State Band Championships; the State Solo and Ensemble Championships; the State Band of Tasmania; music camps and workshops; the National Band Championships (in general, on a 6 year rotation).
